💭 True or False

Let’s talk about some homeschooling and unschooling myths…

Raise your hand if you heard (or believed) something you now realize is a myth when you started homeschooling.

Like:

  • Unschooled children never get along with other kids. They don’t even know how to socialize.
  • Homeschooled kids will always be behind their peers in traditional schools.
  • Unschooled kids aren’t prepared for college and won’t succeed there.
  • Unschooled kids just watch TV and play video games all day
  • Unschooled kids miss out on major life experiences
  • You need to be a teacher to homeschool your kids.
  • Only lazy parents decide to unschool their kids
  • Unschooling is so far away from “real life.”
  • Unschoolers have no rules.

Some are unbelievable, while others are downright hilarious!

But the thing is:

Myths are powerful. You hear lots of these myths and wonder if you’re depriving your kids of fun experiences.

And it’s tough for someone on the “outside” to look through your lens and really understand your choices.

If you still feel skeptical about alternative education, this one’s for you!

Let’s bust some unschooling myths.

I'm the one in the lime green. My 16-year-old son (middle of three boys) is at the front of the line in orange.

What do you do at Galileo?

Entrepreneurship Education

Tell us a bit about your professional and educational background

I'm a serial entrepreneur with a "jack-of-all-trades" background but mostly focused on technology. My education was in liberal arts, then computer science, and then Human-Computer Interaction.

Professionally, I'm an IT management consultant helping startups design successful teams and a usability scientist. I design scientific studies to test software with human beings. I have taught in China at a university. I trained as a pilot, I'm a certified Birth Doula, and have my Permaculture Design Certificate.

Galileo incorporated my latest startup called Kids 2 Market Inc. into their course offering and turned my online program into their Nano "How to Start Your Own Business" in April 2020.

Awesome! What passion projects are you working on?

I'm currently starting two new ventures. First, I'm redesigning my SDE entrepreneurship curriculum to be taught in traditional K-12 schools with a teacher's guide, plus a "business fair in a box." This will be available on Amazon by August 2022.

Second, I have launched a weekly homeschool newsletter called The Alice that provides a themed view into my resources from homeschooling for over 13 years - to literally take you down MY rabbit hole!

Describe your personality!

I can't sit still and have to be learning something new all the time. I have an obsession with all things witches.

Where can we find you?

Hang out with me right here.

Our task is to educate their (our students) whole being so they can face the future. We may not see the future, but they will and our job is to help them make something of it.
